I think the best story one can tell about another person, is a story that is in the other persons own words. Confused? When Gwen and I saw Jody at Christmas 1997, things wound up where they usually wound up anytime that Jody and I got together; with a guitar smack in the middle of things. For 5-6 hours we played and sang one song after another. As the evening progressed we got around to those home grown tunes that only get pulled out on special occasions. Normally the only time that we play songs that we have written is if there is an appreciative audience around. It's amazing how few appreciative audiences there are! J.D. and Bob were there that night so we did have an appreciative audience. There was one particular song that Jody knew that I had liked from the first time I heard it. If I remember correctly he said that he wrote this while he was in college. This song could almost be a self portrait. At Christmas he told me to take this song and do something with it. He had told me that many times in the past and I always blew it off. This time I came away with the words and music to the song. Why this time? Five months later he was gone.

I.... am a rambler
      G
Don't ask me to settle down

  C                   F     G
I met a lot of girls, in my time
C                    F      G
They all asked me to settle down

I would if I could but, since I can't
  C            F   G             C
I say, "Pardon me, I must travel on"

CHORUS

C                F        G
When my roamin', days are through
C                       F           G
I'll sit around and reminisce about you

And I know that the only thing I could do
   C            F   G             C
Is say, "Pardon me, I must travel on"
